They call and ask questions: “How much are your abortions?”…“Do you have the morning-after pill?”…“Can I get RU486 at one of your centers?”

Our goal is to get them to come into one of the centers where we can minister to them, face to face. We want to look them in the eye and speak the truth to them in love. We want to be the physical hands and feet of Christ as His love reaches into their hearts and lives.

But sometimes they can’t [or won’t] come in. Those are the times we have to trust Him to send His love reaching through the telephone lines.

It was a situation like this that one of our Center Directors shared with me a few weeks ago. She took a call from a young woman who wanted a chemical abortion procedure that is commonly called ‘RU486’.

As our Director asked some gentle, probing questions, she discovered that this telephone client was very strongly abortion-minded. She was not ambivalent about the pregnancy at all – she wanted to end it. Our counselor asked for permission to share some of the physical, emotional, and spiritual ramifications of abortion. The girl listened, but was still firm in her resolve to terminate the pregnancy.

The Director sent up a prayer and pled, “Father, help me. How do I keep her on the line and try to find some common ground?” She felt the answer come quickly, “Ask her if she knows what I think about abortion.” Taking a deep breath, our well-trained counselor forged ahead, “This may seem like a strange question, but do you believe in God?” The client’s answer came back quickly, too: “Oh, yes!”

The next course of action became clearer to our Center Director, as she yielded to the leading of the Holy Spirit. “Do you have a Bible there in the house with you?” The client replied, “Yes, of course I have a Bible.” Bold now, the next question was easy, “Would you be willing to go and get it and read something to me from it?” Curious, the client agreed to go and get her Bible.

A moment later she was back on the line, explaining that her text was in a foreign language, but she could translate if the Center Director did not speak the foreign language. [God has such a sense of humor in the way He often does things! J]

“Go to Deuteronomy 30:19-20 and read that to me,” the Center Director instructed. The young woman on the other end of the phone line read the words in her native language and was totally silent.

After a moment passed, the counselor gently asked, “Now, can you explain to me in English what that says?” With a catch in her voice and an attitude of awe the client said, “I think that I have just discovered that God says choose life, and that I don’t really believe in abortion after all.”

His love is constantly reaching…even through telephone lines!
